Turks and Caicos – Grand Turk

Standard

For the first in my travel pieces, I decided to start with Grand Turk. Mainly because I thought it was an absolutely beautiful location and if you are docked there on a Carnival cruise ship, like we were, there is a lot of stuff at your fingertips for free, without an excursion.

We went in 2014 and it was the first time for us. Pulling up to this little island, we really didn’t know what to expect.  We were pretty shocked when our boat docked so close to the shoreline.

It was a stop on our Carnival Cruise and through the cruise line we rented a Cabana at Margaritaville for the day.  We absolutely loved it, but they are limited and sell out fast. So, if you are booking a cruise make sure you get your cabana early, if that is something you are interested in doing. It is air conditioned inside and you get a key so you can lock up your belongings if you want to go explore the shops and island.

But, even if we didn’t have the cabana there is so much free of charge, that it would have been fine with us. Just outside the Cabana doors is the Margaritaville pool. It is free! All you have to do is grab a chair and you are set for a couple hours or all day, however long you want. I will say this, early in the day is best because it does fill up quickly. We got off early and had a couple hours before it got very busy.

Yes, that is our boat in the distance. See what I mean about us being so close to shore!

If the pool is not your thing and you are looking for something beachy. Well, have no fear because the beach chairs at Margaritaville are also free. (I have heard some say since we went in 2014 that you had to rent them now, but I am not sure if that is true or not.)

I will warn that the sand in the ocean here on this side is made up of lots of small shell fragments, it is not the softest sand, but my little one didn’t seem to mind that much!

There is lots of talk about Jack’s Shack, which is just a short walk down the beach. We didn’t make it out there this time but next time it is definitely something we will check out.

We did head out the other way on the island towards what is called “The Conch Shell Graveyard”

We didn’t make it very far with the 4 year old because it was pretty rocky. But, if you travel a little further there are tons of shells to choose from, but we did still manage to find a couple pretty nice conch’s. This is also one of the few places where Carnival will allow you to bring your shells back on the boat. (I would highly suggest that you bring large Zip Lock bags, just in case your conch still has some leftover critter inside – I’m told that can get pretty smelly.)

Look at that drop off… No wonder we could pull so close to shore!

The only thing I regret is we didn’t walk inside one shop in Grand Turk. Not even inside Margaritaville. We were having so much fun that we didn’t even really think about it until it was time to get back on the boat.

I hope this has been a little entertaining and maybe a little helpful. Obviously, there are a lot of things do in Grand Turk, (click the link for the tourism page) but we had a great day just swimming. If your headed out that way, give Jimmy Buffet a high five for me.

I am Back and Feeling Rejuvenated!

Standard

Hello!

I am back!

Oh, I just want to say what an awesome time we had on vacation. It wasn’t perfect and there were things I would change but any day on vacation is better than any day at work! Right!!!

Over the next few weeks I will post some highlights of our trip and maybe some in depth stuff on some of our shore excursions.

I do feel refreshed in more ways than one and actually have a new story idea bumping around inside the old noggin. (Aka…brain J )

Also, I am kind of considering doing the whole NaNoWriMo thing again this year. I did it last year and I got some good ideas and the beginning of a story started. I haven’t done anything with it yet, but maybe one day. It did spin off some ideas for other short stories, so it was helpful.

For now, I just wanted to drop and say hello and leave you with a picture that sums up my entire last week!

Stress…. The Creativity Killer!

Standard

I feel like I am floating, suspended in time. I am not writing. I am going through a dry period. The thing is, I know it’s only because I haven’t sat down at the computer to write.

I am making time for all kinds of other things, but not writing.

Truth be told, it has been a bit of a nightmare around here lately. Baby girl was sick with a virus and running a fever for 6 days. The only way I could keep it below 102-103 was to consistently alternate Tylenol and Ibuprofen.

Then my brother and his boys have been staying at our place for the last 2 weekends. Hectic is an understatement. My house is a wreck and by the time I get something organized and cleaned, something else is a mess.

Top it off with the fact that I feel like I am a failure on my novel and my story is crap and it doesn’t lead to much creativity.

I have definitely found out that STRESS and DISORGANIZATION will kill my creativity.
There is a light at the end of the tunnel. In just over a week we will be climbing aboard a cruise ship and heading out on a Caribbean vacation. It will be a time to recharge and connect with my daughter and husband and hopefully come back refreshed and renewed.

In the meantime, please forgive my lack of postings and know that I am here… hovering around… and will be back regularly in no time!

The sad thing is, without the daily writing prompt of Ready, Set, Done…. I wouldn’t have even written this post… sheeesh!!!

My Bucket List

Standard

It seems like everyone these days is creating a bucket list. A bucket list is a list of things you want to do before you die. It is like a roadmap to help you make the absolute most of your life so you can enjoy and live it to the fullest.

I have always loved the quote by Erma Bombeck, “When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, ‘I used everything you gave me’.” Creating and actually marking things off my bucket list will let me ensure this is true for me when the end of my life comes.

So I guess it is time for me to create my list. I definitely think this will be an ever changing and growing list. With things like they are this year with mom, I doubt I will be able to mark  many (if any) things off my list, but who knows. The first step is getting some things down on paper.

  1. See the Kangaroo’s in Australia
  2. See the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights)
  3. Watch my daughter walk down the Aisle on her wedding day (She is only 2 right now)
  4. Ride a Zip line
  5. Go on a Safari in South Africa
  6. Stay in a hut on the water in Bora Bora
  7. Publish a Novel
  8. Make A million Dollars
  9. Take an RV Trip across the Country
  10. Take a Transcontinental Cruise
  11. Walk in the 3 Day Breast Cancer Awareness walk
  12. Get over my fear of flying, (this is going to be necessary in order to mark many of these things off)
  13. Go Snorkeling in the Belize Barrier Reef
  14. Go Snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef
  15. Learn to Scuba Dive
  16. Finish my degree
  17. Be a grandmother
  18. Go Ghost Hunting with TAPS
  19. Go on The Amazing Race
  20. Own a horse
  21. De-clutter this house
  22. Raise a Happy, Well Rounded, Healthy Daughter
  23. Build our Dream house
  24. Buy a Vacation home in Myrtle Beach
  25. Be completely debt free.

So there is a start to my list. I am sure there will be much more to add as I begin thinking on it more but this is a pretty good start. There may even be a few on the list I can start to tackle now.

Everyone should have a road map of things they want to do and enjoy in this life. So make your own bucket list and get started crossing things off!
